Worgen are a race of lupine humanoids that roam the various wooded regions of Azeroth. Many are known as Gilneans, but have the worgen curse.

History[]

Long ago, a war took place called the War of the Satyr between the night elves and the demonic satyr. A group of druids practiced "Pack Form" which embodied the fury of the wolf ancient Goldrinn. Taught by Ralaar Fangfire, these Druids of the Pack was though to temper the uncontrollable rage used in the form. They used the Scythe of Elune for part of this, it is a mystical artifact crafted by Goldrinn's fang and the staff of Elune. This weapon turned Fangfire's followers into worgen. Blinded by rage Ralaar Fangfire's allies ripped through targets in the war. Malfurion Stormrage then banished these druids to the Emerald Dream where they would rest peacefully for eternity.

Release[]

Years later, several individuals started investigating about worgens. Ur, a mage from Dalaran did research on the worgen and never summoned them. He learned the worgen come from a dark, treacherous world from where no part of it was truly safe. Arugal summoned worgens after reading Ur's book. The worgen first against undead armies but in a heart beat turned on the wizards too. The worgen curse rapidly spread throughout human population. A man named Baron Silverlaine's mansion was put in ruins within minutes. Driven crazy with guilt Arugal raised worgen as his children and even cursed Pyrewood Village. At the same time the night elf Velinde Starsong was given the task of clearing Felwood's demons. She prayed to Elune and received the Scythe.

The Lords of the Emerald Flame are satyrs and enemies to the worgen. Using the Scythe, Velinde summoned worgens with the Scythe of Elune. She told the worgens to remain at Mel'Thandris. She went on a long journey to find Arugal. Her fate remains unknown and it is presumed she died in Duskwood and lost the Scythe. Black Riders of Deadwind Pass came to Duskwood and even killed off a family of farmers just to find the Scythe of Elune. The Terrowulf pack later left the shrine in Ashenvale and their current whereabouts are unknown. A dark mage named Morganth also stole one of Ur's books on shadow magic as well.

The Shattering[]

At the time of the Shattering, Azeroth's second sundering the Gilneas gate known as the Greymane Wall shattered and Gilneas was exposed to the curse. The Horde began invading Gilneas for a port, but the night elves helped defeat them and send them back to their city of Orgrimmar.
